A neighbor's garden

My island neighbor, Julie Leung, one week ago wrote two powerful and beautiful pieces which are well worth the time to read, and to explore their links.

Very good posts. Thanks.

Shifting a little from the condition of poverty a little, one thing that's frustrated me so much is the apparent lack of political involvement among the poor. I'm not talking about marching in the streets. I'm talking about voting.

I know there are a slew of reasons why the poor feel disaffected, but until they realize how self defeating it is to become disconnected from the process of responsible citizenship, their plight is not likely to improve.

Perhaps, the perverse incompetence of the federal government's management of the Katrina disaster will re-awaken a spark of political self determination, activism and responsibility.
